How to Get Lounge Access When Your Basic Business Class Ticket Excludes It
Last Updated May 7, 2026

A growing number of airlines now offer Basic Business Class tickets. These are also known by other names, such as Business "Light" or "Special".
Basic tickets are cheaper than regular business class fares, but come with fewer benefits. Crucially, most exclude airport lounge access — once a standard inclusion with any business class ticket.
As airlines increasingly unbundle premium travel, lounge access is no longer guaranteed even when flying in business class.
This guide explains which airlines sell Basic Business Class fares that exclude airport lounge access, and how to get into a lounge if your ticket does not.
What is Basic or Light Business Class?
With a "Basic" or "Light" Business Class ticket, you'll still enjoy the premium seat and onboard service during your flight. But in exchange for the lower price, you also give up some of the flexibility and extra inclusions that normally come with a standard business class fare.
For example, many Basic Business Class fares exclude lounge access and seat selection, and don't allow free changes or cancellation.
Why Airlines Sell Basic Business Class
The rise of Basic Business Class is part of a broader airline industry trend of "unbundling" airfares. Airlines say this gives customers more choice, although it also creates more opportunities to upsell passengers into higher fares and paid extras.

Low-cost carriers have already mastered the art of selling a cheap "base" fare and charging extra for everything else. Full-service airlines have responded by offering cheaper "Basic" fares which compete on price with the budget carriers.
Full-service airlines do not necessarily want most customers to buy these cheaper Basic fares. Instead, they often hope passengers will "buy up" to a more expensive fare with additional benefits included. This is why Basic fares often come with significant restrictions.
Nonetheless, if someone does buy a Basic fare, airlines also value the opportunity to upsell additional paid services, such as seat selection (which would normally be included with a standard business class ticket).
Airlines with Business Fares that Exclude Lounge Access
Below is a summary of major airlines that sell discounted business class tickets which exclude lounge access and other perks.
(The exact restrictions can vary by route and market, and airlines may change fare inclusions over time. Always check the fare conditions carefully before booking.)
Airline | Fare Name | What's Excluded |
|---|---|---|
Air France | Business Light |
|
Emirates | Business Special |
|
Etihad Airways | Business Value |
|
Finnair | Business Light |
|
KLM | Business Light |
|
Qatar Airways | Business Lite |
|
United Airlines | United Polaris Base |
|
Not all Business Light or Basic fares exclude lounge access, however. It's still included, for example, with Lufthansa Business Light and Business Basic tickets.
Lounge Access on Low-Cost Carriers
Some low-cost carriers offer a business or premium cabin on selected flights. However, these tickets usually do not include airport lounge access either.
Low-cost airlines that don't automatically include lounge access with business class tickets include:
Jetstar (except with Business Max fares)
T'Way Air (rebranding as Trinity Airways)
ZIPAIR

Similarly, French bee Premium, Norse Atlantic Biz Premium, and ScootPlus tickets do not include lounge access.
Other Cases Where Lounge Access Isn't Included
Even outside Basic or Light fares, there are situations where business or first class tickets may not include lounge access.
Flying within the US
Most US airlines, including American Airlines, Delta and United, do not include lounge access when you buy a domestic first class ticket (unless connecting to an international flight).
These airlines may also exclude lounge access when flying business class between the United States and destinations in Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean.
To use an airline lounge when flying within the US, you'd typically need at least one of the following:
An airline lounge membership
An eligible credit card
Status with a non-US partner airline
Purchase one-time access
Upgrading to Business Class
When you upgrade your ticket to business class, most airlines also let you enjoy all the perks that come with it. This usually includes access to airport lounges, priority queues, and an extra baggage allowance, although it varies by airline.
There are some exceptions. The following airlines may not provide complimentary lounge access if you upgrade your ticket to business class:
Finnair: No lounge access when purchasing an upgrade at the airport
Qatar Airways: No lounge access when upgrading with Avios within 14 days of departure
Royal Brunei: No lounge access with RB Upgrades
Vietnam Airlines: No lounge access when upgrading through Optiontown

Some airlines, such as Emirates, may also exclude lounge access if you receive a complimentary or operational upgrade at the airport.
Departing from Selected Airports
Most full-service airlines provide business class passengers with access either to their own lounges, or to third-party lounges at airports where they don't operate one. However, some airlines do not extend access to third-party lounges.
For example, Virgin Australia only provides business class passengers with access to its own lounges. At airports and terminals with no Virgin Australia Lounge available, these passengers do not get any lounge access. JetBlue has a similar policy.

There may also be specific airports where there is simply no lounge available for passengers flying on certain airlines to access.
Other Ways to Get Lounge Access
If your business class ticket doesn't get you into a lounge, there are alternative access options available.
Airline Status
If you hold an eligible frequent flyer status tier with the airline you're flying (or one of its partners), you may be entitled to lounge access on that basis. In general, airlines allow eligible status holders into their lounges regardless of cabin or ticket type.
Credit Cards and Membership Programs
You may be able to access a lounge through a lounge membership such as Priority Pass or Dragonpass.
Many premium credit cards offer airport lounge memberships and/or visits as a complimentary benefit to cardholders. For example, the American Express Platinum Card provides airport lounge access at many different locations.
The range of available lounges, and the number of annual visits included, depends on your credit card. Some airports may not have participating lounges.
Passes via the Airline
Some airlines give passengers booked on Basic Business fares the option to purchase lounge access for an additional fee.

Here are some example prices (correct at the time of writing but subject to change):

|---|---|---|

Passes via LoungePair
If none of the above options work for you, or do not represent good value, there are still ways to purchase lounge access independently of your airline ticket.

LoungePair allows travellers to purchase access to more than 1,400 airport lounges worldwide. You don't need any particular membership, nor to be flying on a particular airline or fare type to buy a pass. You can compare available lounges and purchase access directly through the LoungePair website.
After purchase, your lounge pass is generally available to use immediately. You can redeem it any time, as long as it hasn't expired.
Is Lounge Access Worth Paying For?
If your business class ticket does not include airport lounge access, it may still be worth paying separately for entry. This can be particularly worthwhile during long layovers, at crowded airports, or before overnight flights where lounge facilities (such as showers, food, drinks and quieter seating areas) may improve your overall travel experience.
Business travellers may also value reliable Wi-Fi, workspaces and a quieter environment before their flight. On the other hand, if you only have a short connection or your airport already has excellent public facilities, paying extra for lounge access may not represent good value.

While some airlines sell access to their own lounges for passengers on Basic Business fares, prices can vary significantly. In some cases, it may be cheaper or more convenient to purchase access to a third-party lounge instead.
Even after paying separately for lounge access, you could still end up spending less overall than you would on a full-price Business Class fare.
Summing Up
While business class has traditionally included airport lounge access, that is no longer guaranteed with many modern Basic or Light fares.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of alternative ways to access a lounge before your flight. Depending on the airline and airport, you may be able to buy lounge access directly, use frequent flyer status or credit card benefits, or purchase a one-time pass through LoungePair.
Even if lounge access is not included with your ticket, paying separately can still be a cost-effective alternative to booking a more expensive fully flexible business class fare.
